Women’s Transportation Seminar – Pittsburgh Fundraising Gala

Laura Lesher, EIT

September 8, 2017

In March, I had the privilege of attending the first annual Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Pittsburgh fundraising gala, along with three fellow ms employees and our guests. ms consultants is proud to be one of the initial sponsors of the WTS Pittsburgh Chapter, an international organization dedicated to advancing women in transportation. This local chapter has been in existence for less than two years and is growing quickly!

The featured speaker, Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation Leslie Richards, shared her background and her unique career path. She told how she had taken eight years off in order to raise a family, and then returned to work part time for many years until accepting her current position as Secretary of Transportation.

This story resonated with me as I share a similar story. After working as a highway engineer for several years, I decided to take a break from my career when my first son was born. This past year, after my children were all in school, I decided to reenter the workforce. Fortunately ms has given me the opportunity to restart my career while working a flexible, part-time schedule. I can attest first hand that ms values women, acknowledges their importance in the success of our company and the industry, and supports us in our careers.

I appreciate the flexibility ms has given me to be able to balance my family of six and my career. Additionally, I am grateful to Secretary Richards for sharing her story, encouraging me and many other women going through similar experiences. And I’m thankful to WTS for being a resource and network for women in our community.
