A PROBLEM SOLVER

Like most young adults headed to college, Jason was unsure which major would be best suited for his skill set and interests. As an excellent problem solver and critical thinker, Jason was encouraged to pursue engineering. As a mechanical engineer, Jason spent the early part of his career designing HVAC, plumbing, lighting and power distribution systems for commercial buildings.

DESIGNING FUNCTIONAL + EFFICIENT BUILDINGS

Having started his career designing these practical systems, Jason’s specialty has developed into designing functional and efficient buildings. He has created a priority for ensuring the smart implementation of environmentally sustainable techniques. This priority leaves a positive impact on both our clients and our environment.

ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTION

When Jason was asked about the greatest challenges he faces in this industry and the methods he and the rest of his team use to overcome them, he commented, “Often, the biggest challenge is asking our clients the right type of questions so that we can really understand the causes and consequences of their biggest issues. Understanding the tasks at hand and setting the right expectations about the results is key to a successful project.”

TRENDS + THE FUTURE

Jason sees the biggest trends for the future in his industry to be technology based. As technology continues to evolve and drive the way we do business, it also changes the way our clients do business. With this understanding, Jason is able to make the best use of technology to aid both our client and our firm, all while leading the client towards a successful future.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You will find Jason spending time with his wife, Jessica, and their son, Owen. Jason also enjoys playing volleyball and working on home improvement projects.

CHOOSING ENGINEERING

As a young student, Bill enjoyed and excelled in math and science courses. Heading off to college, he knew engineering was the logical choice. After taking an introductory course, Bill chose civil engineering as his focus because the specialty immediately sparked his interest.

MEETING CLIENT's NEEDS

Working with clients throughout the project lifecycle demands a balance of available resources and making sure clients’ needs are being met. Bill says, “I deal with these challenges by engaging with the talented professionals at ms and constantly working to re-prioritize where to focus my efforts to keep projects on track and clients’ needs satisfied.”

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

The greatest challenge Bill and his clients face is the combination of rapidly aging infrastructure and increased regulations which must be met. Grant funding is limited and does not always offer a sustainable solution to meet the client needs, so working with clients to find the best funding options, and developing the most cost-effective solutions, is of growing importance.

UNIQUE PROJECT SOLUTIONS

Each day and each project presents new and unique challenges to solve. A recent project Bill worked on presented a difficult problem and demanded a very unique solution. When working on the Del-Co Raw Water Pump Station, Bill explains, “For the raw water intake design, we ended up microtunneling under the reservoir and using an underwater excavator to expose the boring machine. The boring machine was then extracted from the bottom of the reservoir.”

OUTSIDE YOUR OFFICE

You can find Bill enjoying a round of golf when he’s not leading the Environmental Business Unit.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science, Marketing – Wheeling Jesuit University
  • Masters of Business Administration – Wheeling Jesuit University

Creating Strategic Partnerships

Jerry started his career assisting clients in commercializing their technologies and physical facilities. These activities resulted in several licensing and cooperative research agreements along with a number of business start-ups. From there, he transitioned to the A/E market where he used his ability to structure strategic partnerships to service the design needs of his clients. Jerry has spent his career developing networks and providing consulting services to the federal government, higher education institutions, and private sector entities.

What's Trending?

When asked about the biggest trends and needs in his field, Jerry commented, “Strategic partnering has become a critical approach in the A/E market sector. This trend is no longer exclusive to smaller firms. Today, it’s not unusual to see mid-sized and larger firms teaming together to bring customers a unique and customized product offering. In addition, owners have existing relationships in specific verticals that they may want to augment with specialty capabilities from other firms. The companies that can successfully execute these relationships often prove to be most successful in the industry and have the opportunity to deliver cutting edge projects.”

Outside the Office

Jerry has a passion for youth sports. He currently coaches both girls and boys basketball and boys baseball. In addition, he and his wife are the youth leaders at their church.

AN ENGINEER FROM THE BEGINNING

Originally intrigued with repairing, rebuilding, and constructing anything he could get his hands on, Sean discovered very early in his childhood that engineering would be a great fit for him. Having built go-karts and tree houses, he knew he had a passion and talent for understanding “how things work.” In middle school, Sean had the opportunity to speak with a civil engineering student which helped him understand the different engineering disciplines and which one most interested him.

THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS

Since his childhood fascination with construction, Sean has built many decks, porches, furniture, remodeled homes, and even a 15-foot antique replica motorboat. His love for construction has also taught him about project management. After having worked on long-term and large scale projects, Sean has found that the devil truly does lie in the details. “You need to think ahead and plan accordingly at all times, knowing that every action you take now will result in some future consequence. We have the ability to control the future outcome of a project by paying close attention to the details today.”

REWARDING PROJECTS

One of the most rewarding projects for Sean has been the design reconstruction of approximately seven miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Overseeing a project of this magnitude from conception to ribbon cutting is an accomplishment he will never forget. As an engineer, projects like this don’t come around every day. Sean advised the young engineers on his team by saying, “Every once in a while, try to stop and appreciate what you are accomplishing. Sometimes we are changing the world we live in, and how we do that can have a very positive effect.”

THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

Sean sees funding as one of the biggest challenges his industry faces today. With so many transportation and infrastructure improvement needs, funding is stretched thin. Being able to “think outside the box” and creatively find solutions to maximize project potential while minimizing project and life-cycle costs is becoming an even greater component in the industry.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You can find Sean spending time with his wife Maria and their three kids, Sara, Anna, and Luke. Together they enjoy boating, hiking, traveling, and attending sporting events. In Sean’s free time he coaches a youth soccer team and serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of Findlay Township planning commission.

EDUCATION

  • Masters of Business Administration – Otterbein University
  • Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering – The Ohio State University

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING

Growing up on a farm, understanding how to dissemble and repair equipment is an imperative skill. Brad’s early introduction to these challenging tasks led to an interest in engineering. After years on the farm, electrical engineering was a natural fit and quickly became a passion for him as he pursed his education.

SPECIALIZING IN ENERGY

Brad has a background in electrical engineering, specializing in energy. He has worked in many areas of the energy industry over the course of his 40+ year career. He has an excellent understanding of the many industry technologies, as well as established relationships with business operators. Brad previously spent nearly 40 years at American Electric Power (AEP), where he specialized in vertically-integrated electric utility, with additional experience in heavy industrial energy. Through this experience at AEP, Brad built a specialized knowledge of energy projects from conception through completion, and everything in-between.

WHAT'S TRENDING

When asked about the energy industry, Brad commented on the biggest trends and needs saying, “One of the biggest trends is the transition in electrical generation away from fossil fuels to renewables and distributed generation. The continued buildout of the electric transmission grid is another major trend. To meet these needs requires a strong strategic plan to pursue these opportunities, and a good assessment of the expertise and skill sets required to perform as well.”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Brad enjoys spending time with his family, especially his three toddler grandsons who provide him endless hours of entertainment and joy. Additionally, he enjoys golfing, RV trips, and long-distance shooting competitions.

SEEKING CREATIVE CHALLENGES

After high school graduation, like many graduates, Sandipan was trying to determine his future career path. Reflecting on his strengths and interests, he knew he wanted a future career that would have creative challenges. He loved drawing, so architecture seemed like an obvious choice!

UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE

Over the course of his career, Sandipan has worked on a wide range of projects including educational institutions, railway stations, broadcasting studios, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and much more. The diversity of his project experience gives him a unique perspective on the specificity of each project’s needs, with the underlying similarities in the execution process across market sectors.

Sandipan says, “Architecture is often perceived as the aesthetic design of a building. Today, it encompasses much more! Architecture is a process of managing many layers of intersecting information. Whether that be HVAC design, material selection, or contractor availability, each of these layers represent factors that impact the design of the building and timeline of the process.” An architect’s ability to successfully manage and control this flow of information is the deciding factor in a project’s successful execution.

REWARDING PROJECT EXPERIENCES

A recent project with unique challenges was the Knox County Service Maintenance Building. The primary design challenge was to address and meet the county’s service needs while blending the utilitarian building into the historic, downtown architecture. The design team carefully studied the architectural fabric of the area and incorporated design elements into the maintenance building, blending it into the historic surroundings.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Sandipan enjoys spending time with his wife and son. Together, they love to travel and have visited four continents. One of Sandipan’s bucket list items is to travel around the world in a single trip.

A PASSION FOR THE COMMUNITY + ENVIRONMENT

In college, Val gravitated towards engineering so she would be better able to serve her community and improve the environment around her. After graduation, Val landed a job in traffic engineering and loved it! With a passion for saving the environment and a knack for traffic engineering, Val knew this industry is where she could make the greatest impact.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

Trends and technology in the engineering field are rapidly developing and changing these days, Val commented that, “data and technology changes are becoming a greater part of mobility and will result in many changes over the next 20 to 30 years on how land use and transportation infrastructure interact. For example, autonomous vehicles will likely not require parking right at a destination, so parking lots may be obsolete or located a distance away from, say, a restaurant or theater. I see a need to incorporate an understanding of data and technology into college engineering curriculum.”

COLLABORATION INSPIRES GREAT PROJECT DESIGN

Working on the Siemens Redevelopment Project with a team of architects, planners, and engineers has been a very rewarding experience for Val. While the architecture group worked on building inventory and repurposing, the planners created an urban, walkable campus. This collaborative effort brought together the best aspects from each of ms consultant’s , to create a project with great design that will serve the clients and surrounding communities for years and years to come. Witnessing the seamless combination of specialties and excellent results made this a very successful and unique learning experience for Val.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Val enjoys spending her time with her family and her pets! Currently she has one dog, two cats, and a cockatiel.

INSPIRED BY LEGOS®

Originally intrigued by “how things work,” Dan was destined for the engineering field. After assembling and dissembling many LEGO® and Matchbox® car cities as a child, Dan knew he wanted to design the world around him. After interning for several engineers at the City of Fort Wayne throughout college, Dan realized civil engineering was the field for him.

EXPERTISE

Dan brings nearly 30 years of engineering experience to the ms team. Specializing in water and wastewater treatment, Dan has been involved in the planning, financing, design, bidding, construction administration and inspection for approximately 600 miles of water main ranging from rural water to urban downtown streets. With the variations in project experience over the years, Dan has developed expert teaming skills, allowing successful partnerships with his clients. His experience as a dad to six children has also prepared him to remain calm in high pressure situations!

SUCCESS THROUGH INNOVATIVE THINKING

Dan’s portfolio includes mostly water, wastewater, and transportation projects. When asked about interesting projects, two came to mind quickly. The first, a transportation funding “nightmare” where INDOT did not have the budget to rehabilitate/replace a high traffic-interchange and bridge that was in desperate need. Dan developed a plan to utilize the existing bridge and intersection by adding turn lanes to alleviate traffic; taking a potential project budget of $20-$30 million down to just over $1 million.

The second, a community that was sending sewage to another community for treatment was quickly seeing their utility expenses sky rocket. Dan found a solution to build an entire sewer collection and treatment system that met both financial and engineering goals. The community did not have to raise tax rates to cover project costs. Dan also received Indiana’s first anti-degradation approval while working on this project.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You will find Dan spending quality time with his wife, six children, and one granddaughter. Together they enjoy traveling and catching their favorite Indiana sports teams, the Boilermakers, Pacers, and Colts, in action!

CHOOSING A PROFESSION

Craig grew up working for his father in residential concrete as a laborer and cement finisher. Craig enjoyed the work and knew he wanted to stay in the industry, so when he learned that civil engineering was the academic parallel to what his father was doing, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.

Having a background in skilled labor has been a great advantage for Craig. “Concrete is one of the toughest of the labor trades,” Craig says, “because of my experience, I don’t feel like I’m missing a link between the skilled labor and the management when I’m on a project site.” His experience as a laborer makes him a great manager because of his firsthand experience and understanding of each task throughout a construction project.

SPECIALIZING IN MANAGEMENT

Craig’s area of specialty within construction administration is management and estimating, as well as coordinating contractors’ scopes of work. Over 20 years of experience in construction administration, combined with Craig’s experience as a skilled laborer, makes him an expert at managing resources, tasks, budget, and time throughout a project.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

With more than two decades experience Craig has vast and versatile project experience. One thing holds true throughout every project, no matter the size or scope, is that each project you encounter something new and broaden your project experience, preparing you for future projects. “Every project seems to help for the next one, but then again, there’s always something that comes up that wasn’t planned; something we weren’t anticipating. That’s what keeps things interesting I guess – never a dull moment!”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You can find Craig spending time with his wife and her son and daughter. Their kids play basketball, soccer, baseball, cross country, and track so you can find Craig and his wife running from event to event trying to keep up! As a family they enjoy camping and hiking in the summer and learning to snow ski in the winter.

An Appreciation for the Built World

There was no “aha” or epiphany moment when Mike was trying to pinpoint exactly what he wanted to do in his career. His civil engineering degree was the result of the great influence of his father, who was a City of Cleveland policeman by day and bricklayer by night and weekend. His dad was always quick to point out one of his bricklaying projects, and Mike could see the pride he took in his work. Mike thought he would like to see the world around him and be able to point and say “I built that” too.

Drawing on Previous Experiences

When asked how previous experience helped prepare Mike for future projects, he remarked, “It is a theme that goes back to my days as a student, but the biggest value I bring is being able to think and act systemically. As a consultant, I help foster understanding and collaboration by drawing upon and sharing the disparate viewpoints of someone who has worked in both the public and private sector, as a planner and as an engineer, as a professor and a student, and as client and a service provider.”

Asking the Right Question

Understanding exactly what a client wants and delivering precisely what they need is always the challenge in the AEC industry. Mike understands that the greatest challenge here is managing expectations and making sure they are truly aligned with what a client wants and expects on any given project. He interfaces directly with the client to truly understand what they wish to accomplish and what their concerns are.

Outside the Office

You can find Mike enjoying time with his family, friends, and pets. He is an avid disc golfer, runner and hiker, and partakes in Cleveland’s robust brewery and ethnic restaurant scene. Mike is a hard-core, long-suffering Browns, Indians and Cavs fan – but also a huge Buckeye supporter.

A THIRD GENERATION ENGINEER

As a third-generation engineer, Tom was introduced to the industry at an early age. With a natural affinity for problem-solving and an interest in improving communities, professional engineering was a fitting crossroads of skill and interest. Today, Tom focuses on business development in the Central Ohio region. His engineering specialty is in water distribution, water supply, and sanitary sewer design.

LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE

During undergrad at the University of Cincinnati, Tom was a member of the golf team. The experience of being a Division I athlete and an engineering student taught him tremendous patience and perseverance. Juggling these responsibilities simultaneously gave Tom insight into both his strengths and weaknesses; developing time management skills and learning when to ask for help along the way.

While school did its part to prepare Tom for a career in engineering, he has learned the most from previous project experience. “Previous experience has prepared me for future projects by teaching me the importance of early research and risk analysis of a project. Understanding the scope of the work, accessing the existing constraints that could delay the project in design or construction, and assigning a degree of risk to those existing restraints at the onset of the project will setup the project for success in terms of quality, schedule and budget.”

MITIGATING FUTURE WATER CRISES

One of the biggest issues Tom sees is how aging infrastructure and inadequate funding have severely impacted the engineering industry. Today, the greatest need in water is to provide clean and safe drinking water to communities to accommodate public well-being. Recent water crises have highlighted the imperfections of business and government relations. These serve as a reminder of the effects technical oversights can have when financial resources are declining, reaffirming the importance of monitoring, enforcement, and regulatory requirements.

To address these issues and mitigate future crises, Tom is actively involved in the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and attends regular workshops to further his education and understanding of regulations and public policy. He says, “The technical components of water line and water treatment design are complicated, but understanding regulations and public policy are also integral factors in our ability as engineers to fulfill our duties to hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public.”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You can find Tom spending time with his wife, Alyssa. Tom and Alyssa are both animal lovers and have adopted three cats together. Fun facts about Tom? He has played the viola for over a decade and once played in a professional gaming tournament as a teenager!

AN EARLY INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING

As a child, Chuck was always interested in building and designing. He spent hours with his toy train set designing the tracks, platform, and surrounding town. Chuck’s father was a roadway designer for PennDOT for 30 years. Seeing his father’s pride while explaining his PennDOT projects left an impression on Chuck. In high school, Chuck enjoyed architecture and technical drawing courses, which then led to the pursuit of a civil engineering degree and career.

TECHNOLOGY

Chuck sees digital delivery as one of the greatest trends and spaces for innovation in the industry. Having started his career at a drafting table, he has experienced this evolution first hand. From a Leroy set, to CAD (computer-aided design), and now to focusing on and improving 3D modeling, each evolution comes with its own set of challenges and benefits. Working through the challenges and adjusting workflows according to each upgrade results in better design in less time for each project.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Chuck explained that working with new clients on the beginning phases of a project can prove to be challenging. He says, “Working with new clients and proving we have their best interests at heart is a big hurdle to jump. Viewing our role as consultants who are also stewards of public interests and funds demonstrates our invested interest in the success of our client’s project. Communication is the key. Carefully listening to the client’s needs and sharing experiences helps achieve value-driven results for all parties involved.”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Chuck enjoys spending time with his two teenage daughters and riding his motorcycle. Additionally, he has serves on the ASHE (American Society of Highway Engineers) Pittsburgh Board of Directors. He has been involved with the group for the past eight years and has enjoyed the relationships he has made working with the professional group.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNER TO MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT

Dax found his passion for economic development while he was a co-owner of a small business in Bloomington, Indiana. During this time, he ran for city council. This propelled him into his municipal executive operations and economic development management career. Today, Dax specializes in strategic growth planning, economic growth, policy development, and government relations.

GROWING A COMMUNITY

Spurring community growth is not the same game it was years ago. Today, Dax says “Most small, local governments are faced with declining population, declining tax revenues, a lack of private investment and aging/failing infrastructure. Much of this decline stems from a lack of planning for economic reinvention 50 years ago and a lack of executive management to help part time elected officials lead their communities into the future.”

Community growth is no longer solely driven by available land and infrastructure. Retaining and growing a population is now very important and communities must begin to invest in quality of place investments. These include sidewalks, trails, parks, quality water and sanitary infrastructure, and complete streets.

Dax’s previous experience gives him the experience to serve as a point of contact for strategic vision, economic reinvention, governance modernization, economic development, and public financing.

ASSISTING COMMUNITIES THROUGH CHALLENGES

Talking communities through challenges they currently face, or will face in the near future, isn’t always the easiest conversation. Dax faces these challenging conversations by knowing the end result will be positive for the community. “ms consultants provides solutions to communities that do not have the luxury of hiring full-time municipal executives or economic development management.”

Many communities also find themselves in dire financial situations. What many communities don’t realize is there are creative financing solutions out there. “Our experts can provide guidance in finding these financing solutions through grant and loans that many clients didn’t know were available to them or didn’t know how to obtain them.” This type of funding leads to better communities by supporting operations contracts, improve infrastructure, and more.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You can find Dax and his wife Kelly keeping up with their two daughters, Trista and Charlee. Dax enjoys hiking, biking, long distance running, racing automobiles, soccer, collecting vinyl records, and listening to as much NPR as possible.

CHANGING COURSE

During her time at The Ohio State University, Staci didn’t foresee her future as a Director of Human Resources right away. She was actually pursuing a degree in political science! Having worked as a receptionist for a Human Resources Manager during college, Staci was encouraged to take a few human resources electives and learn more about the field. After graduation, Staci took a job with a national recruiting firm, which later led to a position as a Human Resources Coordinator. She loved the work and connections she was making and has never looked back!

LEADERSHIP COLUMBUS

Staci is a member and past participant of Leadership Columbus. Leadership Columbus is an urban leadership and development program aimed at accelerated development for high potential business leaders. The program gives participants the opportunity to grow their personal skill set while also making connections with other leaders in their community. Staci took advantage of this opportunity to propel her independent thinking skills, ability to positively impact those around her, and develop a network with leaders in Columbus.

WHAT'S TRENDING

AN EARLY INTEREST IN THE ENVIRONMENT

Anil grew up in a community with a nuclear facility just down the road. His grandfather was a scientist at the facility and as a boy, this piqued Anil’s interests. He frequently asked his grandfather questions about the facility and how they managed their impact on the surrounding environment. This early interest naturally gave Anil a passion for solving and mitigating environmental issues.

Today, Anil specialized in water resources engineering and stormwater management. He has a passion for developing and implementing feasible, innovative, and sustainable solutions to mitigate flooding, improve water quality, and promote sustainable infrastructure.

FACING CHALLENGES

One challenge Anil faces is communicating effectively with public and elected officials about the technicality of the complex issues they are solving. Translating technical engineering data and terms into layman’s terms for a client can be very challenging.  Anil says, “Using innovative technologies, like 2D and 3D modeling and imaging, we can provide clients with visuals of our proposed solutions. These visuals provide a better understanding of the benefits and challenges of each proposed solution.”

A major challenge the entire industry faces is helping clients find funding opportunities for their projects. Based on the ASCE Infrastructure Report Card, water infrastructure in the United States needs a major overhaul. Staying ahead of funding opportunities and working strategically with clients to get funding they need allows long-term, sustainable solutions to be implemented.

STAYING INVOLVED

Anil has prioritized volunteer work and involvement in professional organizations throughout his career.  He began as a member of the Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) Young Professional Committee. Throughout his time with WEF, Anil has been involved with the Stormwater and Watershed Management Committees. Today, he serves as Chair of the WEF National Stormwater Congress. Speaking about his experience with WEF, Anil says, “I have developed great friendships and gotten the chance to work with incredibly talented peers in the industry. These experiences have been invaluable to me as I learned about the industry and progressed in my career.”

INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING

Tony began his career in the public sector with the City of Cleveland during the rebirth of Cleveland in the 1980s. Through a strong work ethic and establishing relationships with many mentors in local government, he was introduced to the civil engineering field. He began his career with the Ohio Department of Transportation in 1991, where he worked for more than 20 years, over three different terms. Through his time with ODOT fulfilling their mission of building and maintaining a safe and efficient highway network, Tony developed a great understanding of the importance of partnerships with the private sector.

COMMUNICATION AS A FOCAL POINT

Tony has more than 38 years of experience in leadership and strategic planning. He has relied on communication, teamwork, and critical thinking throughout his career to continually build his skill set. Reflecting on his work, Tony says, “Communication is the key to overcoming any challenge in any type of relationship, personal or professional. The delicate balance of utilizing advancing technologies to increase efficiencies in processes and reinforce positive working relationships is vital. This challenge never ends and can always be continually improved upon during projects or the fostering of relationships. The customer will demand the same level of service and cultivate improved and different relationships with the supplier. Training and continual improvement to existing processes will also be challenged as technologies change going forward in all industries.”

WHAT'S TRENDING

When asked about future trends and the greatest needs in his industry, Tony commented, “Knowledge transfer in all organizations is critical over the next 10-20 years. Understanding the roles all parties are responsible for within an organization will play an even greater role in meeting and exceeding customer’s expectations. As we move forward, ‘mentors’ must share the pertinent information to those advancing in an organization. It is critical for those looking to fill the gap effectively to listen and apply this knowledge to deliver quality services. Personally, without an open mind and willingness to apply the knowledge of mentors, I would be nowhere. I am grateful to those who took the time to work with me as I still learn from others daily.”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Born and raised within Cleveland city limits, Tony is an avid supporter and fan of all things Cleveland, especially its sports teams. He stays active in his community through volunteer leadership roles in his church, children’s schools, and their extracurricular activities. Finally, he enjoys spending his time outside the office with his wife, their seven children, and one grandchild.

POLITICAL SCIENCE TO PLANNING

Shannon began her career as a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of Representatives, clerking and providing policy assistance for the House Ways and Means Committee, working on bills addressing tax-based economic incentives. This experience has given Shannon unique insight into economic development and the various political and administrative pressures clients may face.

Shannon made the leap from political science to planning during a trip home to Columbus from New York City, where she was living at the time. Her parents had recently moved into a townhouse in downtown Columbus and Shannon was shocked by the Columbus Commons and Scioto Mile development projects. She instantly knew whatever career allowed her to participate in the growth and revitalization of downtowns like Columbus was what she wanted to do next.

SID LEADING TO ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Shannon specializes in downtown revitalizations, neighborhood planning, and revenue capture strategies such as Special Improvement Districts (SIDs). Recently, Shannon worked with the City of Newark, Ohio, to complete a SID for its downtown district. This SID creation happened simultaneous to the development and planning of the Newark Vision Plan. This increased community engagement and downtown development goals and opportunities.

ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY AND REACH PLAN GOALS

Two of the greatest challenges in planning are how to creatively engage the community and ensuring plans are not left on the shelf gathering dust. “At ms we concentrate heavily on our community engagement, attracting as many people as possible to ensure our plans reflect the desires of resident and business owners. We create plans that are implementable, with realistic short- and long-term goals that have step-by-step actions and associated costs. This allows the client to use our plan as a living guidebook, checking off their goals and actions as they are completed.”

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

You may find Shannon in her garden or working on renovations and restorations to her historic home in Italian Village. Each summer, Shannon tries to transform her backyard into a tropical jungle! She is also a member of Franklin Park Conservatory’s Community Gardening program, donating at least 10% of her vegetable and herbs each summer to community kitchens.
