Indianapolis, Indiana

(317) 566-0050 | rwebb@msconsultants.com

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

REGISTRATIONS

  • Professional Engineer: Indiana, Ohio, Virginia

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

Ron Webb has more than twenty-five years of experience in civil engineering, construction, and team management. His expertise is in highways and street systems with environmental study components. Using his communication skills, attention to detail, and resourcefulness, Ron delivers successful projects from planning through construction completion.

CONSTRUCTION BRINGS PERSPECTIVE

Early on, Ron realized that his out-of-office experiences, such as opportunities for construction observation, were teaching him very important lessons and skills, which he has continued to use throughout his career. Having had these opportunities, Ron realized “watching how a project is built and the challenges faced by the contractor during construction brings a new perspective to design.” From this experience, he has cultivated a project creation and management style that allows for detailed, timely, and cost-effective plans. These plans proactively satisfy client needs while eradicating unnecessary complications for contractors.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Emphasis on better planning and the overall project’s impact to both the right-of-way plans and areas immediately surrounding the area; Ron believes this to be the current greatest need in civil engineering. Thinking beyond the project plans to consider everyone and everything potentially impacted is important during project conception, planning, and construction.

Ron also believes continued emphasis on communication during the entire project process must remain a top priority. Understanding exactly what a client wants, designing a feasible and cost-effective project meeting client needs, and then detailing exactly what clients can expect from the project process is incredibly important. This communication process continues to grow in importance as transportation systems and problems grow in complexity. Ron believes that keeping everyone on the same page keeps everyone happy!

BET YOU COULDN'T GUESS...

That Ron actually grew up next door to an exotic animal farm! The farm quarantined animals brought into the United States from other countries before they were sent off to zoos or the circus. Ron has bottle fed lion cubs, helped groom zebras, and over the years, learned to stay away from llamas – apparently there is a lot of flying spit involved!

An Interest in Inventing

Having been intrigued with inventing since childhood, Mike knew architecture would be a field he would enjoy working in. He always liked the idea of getting to spend his time designing and creating environments for people to live in and to improve their quality of life in the process.

Beginning his career in the public sector for housing renewal projects in Baltimore, Mike knew from the start that his work as an architect would have lasting effects. The community rehabilitation work during this period of his career fueled his “interest and passion for creating lasting communities which can evolve and adapt to changing times, while keeping the essence of their architectural character and maintaining the ‘authenticity’ of the places we inhabit every day of our lives.” Through this experience with construction and residential design, he gained an understanding of human contact with the environment and how he could design to complement that relationship.

Mixing Passion and Experience

After experiencing nearly 20 years as an architect Mike considers commercial mixed-use development, placemaking, master planning, and streetscape design to be his areas of expertise. His most notable project in these areas was Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. Mike’s contributions in this project centered on the placement of an indoor mall component at Easton Town Center. The challenge of this project was to develop a plan to best allow for future expansion around the indoor mall without dividing the customer experience. Mike developed a merchandising plan which provided a continuous storefront pedestrian experience for customers walking through the entire development. This plan created a seamless shopping experience for Easton Town Center. The shopping center now hosts over 40 million guests each year and consistently ranks in the top 30 for top performing shopping centers in the U.S.

Where Does Architecture Go From Here?

Mike has identified urban expansion as well as the redevelopment of existing urban environments as some of the most pressing trends in architecture today. Understanding what communities need and integrating that into great design or rehabilitating existing design to meet these new needs is becoming increasingly important. Some of the greatest challenges in these areas is balancing project and design objectives with the time sensitivity of projects all while keeping the client’s happy. Mike’s knack for communication and team collaboration makes him an expert at tackling these challenging projects.

Outside the Office

You will find Mike always inventing, creating, and tinkering. His passion for his profession is evident in his hobbies of woodworking and inventing. A favorite past time of Mike’s is inventing smaller electro-mechanical devices by combining technologies to make fun little contraptions.

DOUG AMOS

DOUG AMOS

Director, Environmental Business Unit

Columbus, Ohio

(614) 898-7100 | damos@msconsultants.com

Education

  • Bachelor of Science, Biology – Fairmont State University

Finding A Passion

After graduating college with a biology degree, Doug was unexpectedly offered a position at a wastewater treatment plant and accepted. While this wasn’t on Doug’s original “to do list,“ it’s how he got his start in utility operations and management. He quickly found that he was passionate about this line of work and has since made a career for himself in the wastewater industry. Almost 30 years later, he still finds the work quite engaging and meaningful.

Balancing Needs VS. Resources

Over the years, Doug has found that the most difficult aspect of his job is continually balancing the changing needs of multiple clients with the resources available. Clients who change their minds on-the-fly demand a high level of adaptability from the project team. Doug consistently emphasizes the importance of communication, collaboration and mutual accountability so his teams can creatively and effectively come up with solutions to their clients changing needs.

Saving the Client $10 Million

Having experience with both the business development and operational sides of the industry, Doug has a great understanding of how to successfully pull major projects together. A notable experience on the operations side led to saving a client millions of dollars. Doug led a team as Project Director to complete a 20-mile water line project. This project demanded meticulous planning and attention to detail. Doug’s emphasis on the importance of communication and collaboration created an efficient team that was able to save their client over $10 million on the project.

Winning Big With PWSA

On the business development side was an effort he led to win a large program management contract with Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority (PWSA). Navigating the complex governmental landscape and positioning his firm in the strongest way possible was quite the challenge. With many very qualified and interested firms, it was a great accomplishment to rise above the competition and win the contract.

Looking Forward

Doug sees aging infrastructure as a topic of growing importance in the industry. “We are living off the investments of prior generations. Increased investment is needed to sustain our quality of life, be prepared for future growth and maintain our competitive edge in a global economy.”

Outside the Office

You can find Doug spending time with his wife, Shanti and their three children, Cole, Grace, and Brock. His children are involved in various sports, so free time is at a minimum for the Amos family! When they do manage to find a free moment they enjoy any chance to travel or just simply all hang out together.

Inspired by LEGOS®

Originally intrigued by “how things work,” Dan Cutshaw was destined for the engineering field. After assembling and dissembling many LEGO® and Matchbox® car cities as a child, Dan knew he wanted to design the world around him. After interning for several engineers at the City of Fort Wayne throughout college, Dan realized civil engineering was the field for him.

Expertise

Dan brings nearly 30 years of engineering experience to the ms team. Specializing in water and wastewater treatment, Dan has been involved in the planning, financing, design, bidding, construction administration and inspection for approximately 600 miles of water main ranging from rural water to urban downtown streets. With the variations in project experience over the years, Dan has developed expert teaming skills, allowing successful partnerships with his clients. His experience as a dad to six children has also prepared him to remain calm in high pressure situations!

Success Through Innovative Thinking

Dan’s portfolio includes mostly water, wastewater, and transportation projects. When asked about interesting projects, two came to mind quickly. The first, a transportation funding “nightmare” where INDOT did not have the budget to rehabilitate/replace a high traffic-interchange and bridge that was in desperate need. Dan developed a plan to utilize the existing bridge and intersection by adding turn lanes to alleviate traffic; taking a potential project budget of $20-$30 million down to just over $1 million.

The second, a community that was sending sewage to another community for treatment was quickly seeing their utility expenses sky rocket. Dan found a solution to build an entire sewer collection and treatment system that met both financial and engineering goals. The community did not have to raise tax rates to cover project costs. Dan also received Indiana’s first anti-degradation approval while working on this project.

Outside the Office

You will find Dan spending quality time with his wife, six children, and one granddaughter. Together they enjoy traveling and catching their favorite Indiana sports teams, the Boilermakers, Pacers, and Colts, in action!

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Architecture – Syracuse University
  • Master of Architecture – University of Pennsylvania

REGISTRATIONS

  • LEED Green Associate
  • Registered Architect: Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and Texas

AN ARCHITECT FROM THE BEGINNING

Stephen always knew he wanted to be an architect. His interests were sparked from a young age when he watched his parents going through the home building process. Their architect was a family friend, so Stephen had the opportunity to spend time at his studio, discovering architecture hands-on. He became fascinated by the precision of the drawings and cardboard models.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Over Stephen’s thirty years of experience as an architect, he has learned that communication is the key to each and every project. Not only is it important for understanding the wants and needs of the client, but great communication can bring your project to the next level. “Architect(s) should be prepared to design solutions that exceed the client’s expectations in some way. This has to do with helping the client see possibilities that may not have already been identified.”

INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE

Stephen is fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to do quite a lot of traveling over the years. This has allowed him to see architecture from a global perspective, providing inspiration for hundreds of projects. The exposure has also given Stephen a better idea of what constitutes as quality design and opens up new possibilities when he creates design solutions.

PROJECTS THAT IMPRESS

Creating an integrated working space for Industrial Scientific Corporation’s employees held unique design and logistical challenges. Stephen was tasked with breaking down barriers between the manufacturing floor, offices, and lab spaces, which required quite a bit of creative problem solving. The solution was situating the three functions around a large common space to maximize productivity and collaborative efforts.

A second notable project was Stephen’s work on the Pausch Bridge at Carnegie Mellon University. This bridge was built in memorial of a former professor, Randy Pausch, author of The Last Lecture. The bridge is a simple link from the Gates Center for Computer Science to the Purnell Center with a complex design. Over 7,000 LED lights were integrated into the bridge’s design. These lights display visual metaphors for different themes found in Professor Pausch’s book.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Stephen can be found spending his free time with his five children. He also enjoys any activity that allows him to enjoy the great outdoors.

An Engineer from the Beginning

Originally intrigued with repairing, rebuilding, and constructing anything he could get his hands on, Sean discovered very early in his childhood that engineering would be a great fit for him. Having built go-karts and tree houses, he knew he had a passion and talent for understanding “how things work.” In middle school, Sean had the opportunity to speak with a civil engineering student which helped him understand the different engineering disciplines and which one most interested him.

The Devil’s in the Details

Since his childhood fascination with construction, Sean has built many decks, porches, furniture, remodeled homes, and even a 15-foot antique replica motorboat. His love for construction has also taught him about project management. After having worked on long-term and large scale projects, Sean has found that the devil truly does lie in the details. “You need to think ahead and plan accordingly at all times, knowing that every action you take now will result in some future consequence. We have the ability to control the future outcome of a project by paying close attention to the details today.”

Rewarding Projects

One of the most rewarding projects for Sean has been the design reconstruction of approximately seven miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Overseeing a project of this magnitude from conception to ribbon cutting is an accomplishment he will never forget. As an engineer, projects like this don’t come around every day. Sean advised the young engineers on his team by saying, “Every once in a while, try to stop and appreciate what you are accomplishing. Sometimes we are changing the world we live in, and how we do that can have a very positive effect.”

Thinking Outside of the Box

Sean sees funding as one of the biggest challenges his industry faces today. With so many transportation and infrastructure improvement needs, funding is stretched thin. Being able to “think outside the box” and creatively find solutions to maximize project potential while minimizing project and life-cycle costs is becoming an even greater component in the industry.

Expertise Comes with Experience

After earning her architecture degree from Kent State University, getting LEED AP certified, and becoming a registered architect, Annissa has found that she learns the most when she is out in the field. Speaking with contractors to learn and see firsthand what they do and how they do it has been an invaluable tool in building her skill set as an architect.

With field experience under her belt, Annissa considers commercial, institutional, and LEED certified buildings to be her specialties. Specifically, she has recently worked on historic renovation projects and finds those particularly challenging but rewarding, “whether complete conversions or renovations, it has been a very interesting process. It’s almost like you’re putting your own touch on something with timeless charm.”

Overcoming Challenges

Annissa found that the biggest challenge she has faced in the industry are with historic renovations and reconstructions. Finding a way to seamlessly blend the new and old construction can be a very tedious, but rewarding, task. One of the greatest ways she has found to overcome these obstacles is with communication, not only with the client, but with the rest of the team. Understanding the client’s expectations and clearly translating that into the designs and plans is a key aspect in successful projects.

The Road to Becoming an Architect

From a very young age Annissa enjoyed working with her grandpa in his woodworking shop. Over time, she became intrigued with the Craftsman style movement, a movement defined by its originality, simplicity, natural materials, and handcraftsmanship. By the age of eight, Annissa was fascinated with architecture. Years later, after reading and admiring many Frank Lloyd Wright books, she knew she would make architecture her career!

Outside The Office

Annissa is a member of the Leadership Mahoning Valley Class of 2017, an organization focused on volunteering and commitment to change throughout the Youngstown and Warren area.  She also participates as a mentor for the United Way Young Women’s Mentorship program.

In her free time you can find Annissa spending quality time with her husband, Matt, and their sweet pup, Cocoa.  They enjoy staying active by playing in a bocce league!

EXPERTISE

Alex Beres is known as our very own “Grant Guru” as the Director of Finance, Grants & Funding. Recognized by Columbus Business First in their monthly, “Twenty People to Know in Central Ohio Government,” Alex brings his expertise in public finance, economic development, and government.

Finding Financing Solutions

Alex believes some of the biggest challenges he faces in his line of work involve grant funding opportunities and programs for public works projects continuously becoming smaller and less available. In order to combat this issue, Alex helps to find creative ways to have projects generate their own revenue through various development tools, such as tax increment financing, new community authorities, user payments, as well as continuous advocacy for funding solutions via public policy at the local, state, and federal level.

PAST SUCCESS

Alex recently worked on an infrastructure loan financing “bank” for the Franklin County Commissioners. He was able to structure a County loan into a Public Works Commission state-wide competitive grant application for the Village of Marble Cliff. The loan leveraged the village’s local match, consequently giving them a higher score, which allowed them to be awarded a grant that funded a substantial part of an industrial park water line project.

Experience

With a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and a Doctorate with an emphasis in Structural Engineering from Purdue University, Lisa Samples, Ph.D., P.E. is a Structural Engineer in the Raleigh, North Carolina office. Her Professional Engineer registrations include the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Prior to joining ms consultants in 2013, Lisa’s work included structural design and ratings analysis for simple and complex bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. Since joining ms, Lisa has worked on a number of projects. Lisa found her most interesting project to date to be the rehabilitation of the Homeville Viaduct Bridge in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The project involved the reconfiguration of some of the bridge bearings to eliminate joints in the bridge deck to improve future maintenance needs. This change required an analysis of the existing pier to determine its suitability for the new configuration, and the unique shape of the historic piers required a complex method of analysis not used for a typical Pennsylvania pier design.

A YOUNG ENGINEER

Lisa’s passion for engineering started at a young age. Even as a child, she enjoyed the task of building something, whether it was Legos or a clubhouse in the woods. As the daughter of an electrical engineer, Lisa was always exposed to the math and science world.  Lisa says she developed a love for mathematics early and it only seemed natural to choose engineering as her profession.

OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE

In her free time, Lisa volunteers for her local elementary school and neighborhood youth swim team. She also enjoys swimming and hiking for recreation. Additionally, Lisa serves as Treasurer for the Raleigh Engineers Club.

A Passion for Math and Science

Originally intrigued by the order and symmetry of mathematics and science, Travis saw the opportunity to study engineering because it uses math in a practical way. In his profession, engineering allows him to express creativity through geometry and logic. Travis earned both his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering and his Masters of Engineering in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University. He then worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for eleven years, in various units.

Evolution of Highway Engineering

When asked about his previous and unique project experiences, Travis stated, “some professions require repetitive work with few challenges. Highway engineering is not one of those. The canvas we paint upon is always different. Though milestones may be similar, each project is unique and provides learning opportunities.”

As a highway engineer, Travis is constantly exposed to different projects in his field. Even off-the-clock when he drives, he thinks about how he can bring highway engineering to the next level through reflecting in real time. When he encounters a road that is need of repair or that he believe could have been designed better, he thinks about the ways he could incorporate new ideas into the design to improve the road’s efficiencies and overall functionality.

Perspective on Industry Challenges and Trends

Travis finds that a common challenge in the engineering industry is becoming familiar with the standards, policies, and procedures of other states, as well as learning how to use new software in the most efficient manner. By developing relationships with others, both inside and outside of ms consultants, Travis is able to bolster his weaknesses with their strengths to provide the most efficient solution.

Throughout his years of experience, Travis finds that one of the biggest trends in highway design is corridor modeling. With the continuous change in software, he stays on the cutting edge of technology by participating in tech conferences, connecting with software and workspace developers, and getting hands-on experience with new products.

In His Spare Time

Travis enjoys spending time with his family and friends and has two young children. He says he is “filled with awe and amusement watching them grow.” They play games, watch movies, talk, laugh, and just enjoy each others company.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Arts, Mass Communication/Journalism – St. Bonaventure University

IT STARTED WITH JOURNALISM

Tony was inspired by his older brother to pursue a career in journalism, but a recession in the 1980s decreased print journalism opportunities and landed him an internship with the city of Cleveland. From there, Tony spent his career building relationships which eventually lead to an interest in civil engineering, including a lasting relationship with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

PROJECTS THAT IMPRESS

In his previous role, Tony developed and marketed the “DoTheDetour.org” campaign with the Ohio Department of Transportation for Summit and Stark County. The website provides up to the minute information on project progress and detours which may impact commutes. Marketing efforts for this campaign included distributing educational material to the public and a number of public speaking appearances to keep communities surrounding each project updated and informed. At the project’s conclusion in 2022, the total roadway improvements will total $500 million.

FACING CHALLENGES WITH COMMUNICATION

The greatest challenges Tony faces on a day-to-day basis, like many others, are openly and efficiently communicating with team members and clients. He says, “Communication is the key to overcoming any challenges in vendor/client or any type of relationship. The key is to increase efficiency while also reinforcing positive working relationships. This requires a delicate balance between personal interactions and leveraging technologies. The challenge of this balance never ends and can always be continually improved upon during projects or the fostering of relationships.”

BUILD A COMMUNITY, BUILD A CAREER

Staying active and leading in his community are two things Tony believes has helped him excel in his career. Having held various leadership positions in his community’s church and school, Tony has shared his passions with others while developing relationships and fine tuning his communication and teamwork skills along the way.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Tony can be found spending time with his wife Lynette and their seven children, together they enjoy supporting all Cleveland sports teams!

A PASSION FOR THE COMMUNITY + ENVIRONMENT

In college, Val gravitated towards engineering so she would be better able to serve her community and improve the environment around her. After graduation, Val landed a job in traffic engineering and loved it! With a passion for saving the environment and a knack for traffic engineering, Val knew this industry is where she could make the greatest impact.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

Trends and technology in the engineering field are rapidly developing and changing these days, Val commented that, “data and technology changes are becoming a greater part of mobility and will result in many changes over the next 20 to 30 years on how land use and transportation infrastructure interact. For example, autonomous vehicles will likely not require parking right at a destination, so parking lots may be obsolete or located a distance away from, say, a restaurant or theater. I see a need to incorporate an understanding of data and technology into college engineering curriculum.”

COLLABORATION INSPIRES GREAT PROJECT DESIGN

Working on the Siemens Redevelopment Project with a team of architects, planners, and engineers has been a very rewarding experience for Val. While the architecture group worked on building inventory and repurposing, the planners created an urban, walkable campus. The Road to Architecture

Growing up, Cathy had a natural affinity for math and a love of art. A neighbor suggested that she should use this interest to her advantage. In high school, Cathy decided she would use this skill set to pursue architecture. Over 20 years later, she still loves being an architect!

Memorable Project Experiences

Cathy’s most memorable and unique project was also her very first project. After graduating, Cathy’s first project was the Annunciation Orthodox Greek Cathedral in downtown Columbus. The unique part? The project was almost entirely hand drafted! Cathy was able to make many field visits during construction, so she not only witnessed the building going up, but also the installation of the mosaics in the dome ceiling – what a cool project!

Facing Challenges Head On

When working with clients, Cathy has found the greatest challenge to be scheduling and maintaining the timeline throughout the project. Often times, there are permits and other elements which cannot be controlled by the architects and may delay a job. Maintaining open communication with the client, collaborating with the ms permitting team, and preparing for delays in advance help keep the project moving and the clients happy!

Times are Changing

When asked about the greatest industry changes, now and in the future, Cathy emphasized an increased reliance on technology. “Technology in society and how people shop is changing the way clients look at their products. Being able to offer solutions to these ever-increasing challenges in the client world is something that needs to be addressed. I think we can meet the client’s needs with creative solutions from the experienced team we currently have in place, along with shaping the young designers as they continue to learn and grow.”

Outside the Office

You can find Cathy and her husband Sam attending their son Vincent’s many football and lacrosse games. Together, they enjoy snow skiing and have traveled all over the country trying out slopes from New York to Colorado. Cathy also enjoys playing co-ed softball, sports photography, graphic design, and her cats.
