2017 Stepping Up For Heart Health

June 12, 2017

We are kicking off our 5th annual Pedometer Challenge this week and first on the list of things to do is upgrade the name! ms employees have started tracking and challenging their personal fitness via Fitbits over the last year and thus the new name for our annual challenge has become The Fitbit Challenge!

Last year, our team surpassed the 97,000,000 step goal to earn a $10,000 donation to regional American Diabetes Associations. This year, the $10,000 reward will be donated to the American Heart Association (AHA) if ms employees can rally again to meet their new goal, 100,000,000 steps!

WHY HEART HEALTH?

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans today. The American Heart Association, founded in 1924, is working with a network of over 22.5 million volunteers to fund research, create stronger public health policies and provide critical information and education to the public.

The risk of heart disease can be lowered by adhering to the AHA’s Life’s Simple 7: not smoking, being physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, eating a healthy diet, controlling blood pressure, controlling cholesterol and controlling blood sugar. The American Heart Association wants everyone to incorporate Life’s Simple 7 into their daily lives to improve American’s health. The AHA is working towards a goal of improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% and reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20% by 2020.
