Grand River Academy is located in the small rural community of Austinburg, Ohio approximately ten miles southwest of the City of Ashtabula. The approximately 200-acre campus and the rural area provides a harmonious blend of our traditional past and the practical present. The campus location provides a small-town semi-rural atmosphere with relatively limited distractions for students on a daily basis, but has the ability to expose students to urban cultural facilities as part of the educational process.
One of the first assessment tasks of this project was to document the existing conditions of the campus and illustrate the main functions, which were identified as faculty housing, student housing, administration, education, recreation, and miscellaneous services/support.
After the assessment of the campus buildings and facilities, numerous discussions were held with the Planning Committee to determine viable planning options for the future and to refine these initiatives. The purpose of this master plan was to summarize the Academy’s primary options and provide a road map to guide reasonable and efficient campus development through the next 10 years. Recommendations were included for faculty housing, student housing, administration, education, recreation, service facilities, and campus security.
Working with the Planning Committee and the local Planning Authority, ms consultants assisted Grand River Academy in developing the foundation for changing the existing R-1 zoning to an Educational Campus District, facilitating future planning and reducing potential zoning variance applications while developing standards for consistent and thoughtful growth.
