Brian Jacobson Joins the ms Water Resources Team
Brian Jacobson, a certified Professional Hydrologist and Certified Floodplain Manager, joins ms as the Water Resources Operations Leader. Brian brings over 23+ years of work experience in the water resources industry to his new position. He has an extensive set of skills in the core aspects of the profession, including stormwater and water quality expertise, project management and delivery, team leadership and development, business development, contract negotiation, and project financials.
We Sat Down with Brian to Learn More About Him and the Industry
What led you to ms? How did you land here?
The ms Team! My interest in ms started with getting to know the ms leadership in the water business unit as well as leaders here in North Carolina, and my interest grew as I learned about the direction of the company. It was clear from the start that ms values its people and clients and that I would be joining an outstanding team with an impressive track record and reputation. It also became clear that many of my personal and professional values and goals aligned with those with whom I would be working.
What are you most looking forward to in this role?
The opportunity to serve clients, solve challenging water quality and quantity problems, and lead a local water resources team in North Carolina that is known for our expertise and innovative solutions.
What do you feel is the biggest trend/need in your specialty area(s)? Where do you see the industry in the next 10 years?
This is a loaded question, but when it comes to water resources, a few fascinating topics that come to mind include:
- Smart water monitoring and technological advancements in the methods we use to collect, distribute, and analyze water data.
- Our understanding of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and microplastics, and how to address these concerns with advanced treatment methods.
- Integrating more nature-based solutions into planning and stormwater management decisions.
As a new hire, what has really stood out to you at ms so far?
The welcoming nature and support shown to me by everyone in the company. During the first few weeks, I had an opportunity to meet with several individuals in leadership positions and attend ms’ 60th anniversary celebration. I came away from these experiences with a deep appreciation of our strong leadership, impressive technical capabilities, and genuine friendships within the company.
What advice do you have for someone beginning their career in the AEC industry?
Learn as much as you can about all parts of our business and adapt quickly to changes. When you find a topic that excites you, become the resident expert!

What was your first job?
Landscaping and lawn care in high school and college. My first professional job was with New Jersey DEP’s Watershed Management Program as a water quality modeler.
What’s the next country you want to travel to?
New Zealand
If you had an extra hour of time each day, how would you use it?
Woodworking or on a bike ride with our kids.
Best concert you’ve attended?
I’m not a big concert-goer, but I have a fun memory of seeing Jerry Seinfeld performing stand-up comedy.

Sweet!
If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?
How to be a great dad and husband.
Do you have any pets?
Our family adopted a cat named “Penny” during the COVID-19 lockdown.
