Ohio Rest Areas

The Ohio Department of Transportation launched an initiative to improve Ohio rest stops off major interstate highways. Our ms team provided a variety of services to each rest stop in Ashtabula, Portage, and Washington counties. These three projects are part of a larger effort to restore 36 rest areas by the end of 2026.

A New Space for Tired Travelers

The ms team partnered with ODOT and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission to design new buildings for rest stop patrons. The Ashtabula rest stop is not only a space to use the restroom and park cars, but also a safe place to relax, stretch your legs. You can learn about the nature surrounding you via multiple placards that tell you about the native plants used within the landscape throughout the property.

In addition to building a new rest stop space, the project included updated walking trails and picnic areas to encourage individuals and families to enjoy spending some reprieve time at these locations.

Welcome Center

Rather than renovating or adding to the old rest stop welcome center, the old building was demolished to begin construction on a new building prototype. The new welcome center has over 6,000 sq. ft. of space for travelers to take a break from long drives and confined spaces.

The welcome center is more than a place of rest—it’s a state landmark for new visitors. ms consultants partnered with Tourism Ohio to outfit the building with opportunities for visitors to learn about the state and natural resources in the area. Many states have seen positive reviews for rest stops near state borders, encouraging visitors to enjoy their trip through the state. Ohio has a reputation for great rest stops, particularly the Jeffersonville welcome center between Columbus and Cincinnati.

Public Safety

Patrons of the welcome center expect clean water and available restrooms, so the team implemented solutions to improve the water quality, sustainability features, storm sewers, and underdrains.

ms and ODOT focused on public safety in the design of this rest area with security lighting in parking and building areas. These safety measures were included without disrupting the existing building and parking locations.

Encouraging Tourism

Driving through a state is more than a trip—it’s a new place to explore. Through these renovated rest areas, ODOT and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission will provide vital stops for drivers and their passengers. Our team’s partnership with Tourism Ohio adds a nature and history-focused learning experience for new visitors to see the beauty of what Ohio has to offer.
