ms consultants partnered with the City of Hilliard to extend Cosgray Road south, aligning it with Alton and Darby Creek Road to improve connectivity.
The project included:
This project improves roadway capacity for future growth and balances the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. A traffic study determined that the roundabout at Scioto Darby Road would result in over 70% fewer fatal and injury crashes than a traditional signalized intersection. The new design reduces travel speeds, shortens crosswalk distances, and eliminates the congestion-causing “dogleg” intersection, leading to fewer rear-end collisions and safer pedestrian crossings.
Key benefits include:
The multilane hybrid roundabout at Scioto Darby Road, expected to serve over 30,000 vehicles per day, features lane spirals and dedicated exits that guide drivers safely, minimizing lane changes and crash risks. Raised crosswalks support pedestrian safety and traffic calming, while the design meets federal accessibility guidelines.
Project innovations:
Aesthetics played a significant role, as the area serves as a gateway to public spaces. Brick paver patterns and charcoaled-toned concrete create visually appealing roundabouts, while steel-backed timber guardrails integrate with the environment.
Other sustainable features include:
The Cosgray Road Extension project has transformed the gateway to Hilliard’s wellness campus, improving traffic safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing pedestrian connectivity. The project supports a more walkable, accessible community and sets a new standard for sustainable infrastructure in the region.
