YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – It’s been talked about for years and on Tuesday, there was a chance to see what Youngstown’s multi-million dollar outdoor amphitheater might look like.

Architects showed off a series of drawings to members of the Youngstown Design Review Committee.

“We’ve tried to really create this as a multi-purpose type of a space, something that can accommodate large numbers of people for some of the larger shows,” said Matt McGrath, with MKSK Studios.

The amphitheater will be built off of Front Street on some old steel mill land. It will be next to the Covelli Centre along the Mahoning River. The plans call for a sloped lawn area with seating closer to the stage.

“When you look down Phelps Street, you’ll see in the distance this stage structure,” said Kate Spires, of MS Consultants.

Committee members were told JAC Management, which now runs the Covelli Centre, will maintain the new venue as well. The architects say the two facilities will be connected by a pedestrian walkway.

“The main egress is along Phelps Street so you can enter it along Phelps and the plaza if you’re coming from the north. You can also enter it from the promenade,” Spires said.

The amphitheater will offer seating and lawn space to hold roughly 4,500 people attending concerts and shows, but it will also include an open-air plaza.

“Again, for food truck parking, or events or community activities when there’s not something going on in the amphitheater,” McGrath said.

The commission members approved the design.

It now heads to the city’s planning commission, which will eventually make its own recommendation to city council.

The nearly $8 million project is expected to be completed in the spring of next year.
