Boardman Township Park
The Boardman Township Park District hired ms consultants to prepare a geographically-accurate 36”x48” trail map of their 227-acre community park.
Boardman Township is located in northeast Ohio near Youngstown and the park is located in the midst of the township’s commercial development along U.S. Route 224. Of the 227 acres, approximately 60 acres are developed with a variety of recreational facilities – pavilions, indoor meeting rooms, tennis courts, softball fields, sand volleyball courts, a Hike & Bike Trail, and two children’s playgrounds. The other 167 acres is preserved for natural habitat and supports many native species of animals and plants, including stands of Ohio’s glaciated Beech/Maple forests and lowland hardwood forests.
To complete this project the team field surveyed the trail system with a Trimble GeoXH GPS (Global Positioning System) to spatially locate the trails within 3 feet.
Once the trails were surveyed, the GPS survey locations were used to accurately digitize the trail system into an ArcGIS base map, which included building, pavement and other layers from the Mahoning County Geographic Information System. The base map was then exported into graphic design software to prepare an aesthetically pleasing map including pictures, legends, facility keys and park descriptions.
The completed map has been used for newsletters, park planning projects, the park website and large format signage for park patrons.
